Impressive list and I'm assuming it is your compilation. Welcome to A2K and the Film Forum.
I've never even attempted to do a 100 list.

I found more comedies on the list than most, including Keaton's classic "The General," Woody Allen's "Manhattan" and Wilder's "Some Like It Hot."

Silly you (you seem to be getting to know me quite quickly with my little innocent barb "Dumb and Dumber -- thanks for taking it in the right spirit!) Of course, the 100 best films list of AFI is interesting because it's voted on by not just the same basic voting block of the Oscars but also by film critics and historians. Each list gives a different mix. Although Sight and Sound's poll of last year gives the ten best I have never found where they published a 100 best of Critics or Directors. Of the Kenji list, six of them are on my top ten with "Vertigo" number one.

Thank you everyone for the warm and touching welcome. Looks like i've found a good site here, with like-minded people and plenty of activity. Interesting other lists posted.

Fbeazer; i've long wanted to see Antonio das Mortes. In Brazil they seem to rate his Black God White Devil even higher. I've also not seen Meyer, Yamamoto and Kutz (can you say something about Pearl of the Crown?), and a few of your Italians; Monicelli, Wertmuller, Scola and Petri- unavailable in UK. Good to see such rare and interesting choices. I appreciate your inclusion of In the Realm of the Senses- perhaps i should have done the same.

Do see Sansho the Bailiff, anyone who hasn't!

kenji, I've seen both Antonio Das Mortes and also Deus e o Diabo Na Terra Do Sol (Black God, White Devil), which I also liked very much -one of the best opening sequences in cinema: the slaughtering of an ox with a voice in off reciting the Bible- but did not find as "round" as Antonio Das Mortes.
I am afraid Antonio Das Mortes lost with time (but I haven't been able to see it again) and I understand that Rocha's masterpiece is Terra em Trance.

Meyer is quite known for The Day After; and Time After Time is a romantic sci-fi comedy-thriller.

Eiichi Yamamoto's Belladonna is a haunting erotic animated film.

Kutz's Pearl of the Crown is about the memories of a coal miner trapped in an explosion, and the decision the mine administrators have to face.

Scola and Monicelli are Classics, in the best sense of the word. Both have several masterpieces. In the English speaking word Scola's "A Special Day" is quite known. Wertmüller is odd, but that film is particularly good. Petri is a political filmmaker, with acute humour (best known for "The Working Class Goes to Paradise").

Haven't seen Sansho the Bailiff.
