Is it a wireless router? If so, it sounds like it may have been configured to stop broadcasting it's wireless network name (look for something about SSID broadcast in the router settings).

Are there other entries in the connection list? Lots of laptops have a way to turn off the wireless adapter, and people have been known to turn it off by accident, or to forget to turn it back on.

Can you verify that the wireless access point has power?

Can another device connect to the access point?
