@RexRed,
Of all of the things to honor in the last year, the people who labored in such dangerous conditions to remove these fuel rods are the greatest heroes of 2014 in my opinion. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU! The world is forever in your debt.

As I understand it from reading about this, the spent fuel is rather trivial, compared to the real problem, the melted down cores. It's sort of like "the car in my garage may explode at any second.... but I sent the bomb squad in there, and they successfully got my groceries out of the trunk."

No, actually what you have said is wrong. The spent and unused fuel alone had the potential for a mass extinction event! Sorry to be emphatic. The melt downs are very bad also but the spent fuel was even worse. It could have gone off and become in itself a very bad event. That is no longer a serious threat now.

BREAKING: Chevron has cancelled its plans to drill in the Canadian Arctic indefinitely! This is great news for the Arctic.

Now let's make sure Shell does the same and protect the WHOLE Arctic from oil drilling >>>http://grnpc.org/IgeKT

A oil extraction also uses water and contaminates it in the process of drilling.

Seems that we're not making the most out of solar yet, but even less so out of wind and tidal sources. I don't think there's a single magic bullet. We've got to put our eggs in as many different, sustainable and clean baskets as we can.

Strong fire at transformer of Yuzhnoukrainsk Nuclear Power Plant. Extinguished for now...

Yuzhnoukrainsk (Ukrainian: Южноукраїнськ) is a city in Mykolaiv Oblast, Ukraine. Population is 40573 as of Jan 2013. <---wiki
Yuzhnoukrainsk NPP is located near the city of Yuzhnoukrainsk, approximately 350 kilometers (over 200 miles) south of the capital Kiev. This nuclear power station has three VVER-1000 reactors and a net achievement of 2,850 megawatts (MW). It is at present the second largest of the five nuclear power stations in the country.

Did I mention a fire at a nuke plant is never a good thing?

@RexRed,
Solar cells are not presently a good alternative to fossil fuels. While they have some advantages, they have a dark side as well, as reported by the Los Angeles Times:
http://articles.latimes.com/2009/jan/14/business/fi-notsogreen14

Quote:
The Los Angeles Times reports that we may be trading one evil for another with all of the potential waste generated from the life-cycle of a solar panel. While maybe not as harmful as mountaintop removal from coal or emissions emitted from the millions of cars on the road, the generation of electricity from solar does have its own dark side.Huge amounts of fossil fuels are used in the manufacture of the cells and, just like many other electronics, the waste metals not used in production also present their own disposal problems, mercury and chromium being two of the top problem-makers. We've also reported before that the installation of solar panels also includes toxic materials like the PVC and glues used in the conduit.
