@William,
The official version is that I know three languages.
Then, as where I was born dialect is as complex as a non written language, my personal version is that I know four...Wink

@buildingplanner,
I'm a lady from Paris, so I am fluent in French of course.
Otherwise, I am almost fluent in:

- English, as I grew up in Manhattan (1964 to 1973)
- Spanish, as I lived in Buenos Aires in Argentina (1981-1985)

My dad's a journalist.

@mikinsmith,
Hello, Mikinsmith:

I am 75 years old and still learning my native language, English.

They say that language study is good mental exercise, so my hobby is to study two foreign languages + English grammar.

1. I studied Spanish in high school in the 1950s!!! I can now read easier articles in a newspaper; I can now understood 80% of a TV newscast; and I can converse in Spanish, using far from perfect Spanish.

2. I started to study (Mandarin) Chinese in 1960. I still cannot speak it; I still cannot understand it. It's entirely my fault: I am too lazy to practice it. But I can read it a bit -- with a good dictionary. And I could write a letter in Chinese to someone -- although the reader would laugh to death at my mistakes.

James

P.S. I am sure that you already know this, but the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has a wonderful news website that reports the news in many languages. That's how I practice my Chinese reading.

There are lots of languages in the world. but few people in the world that able to know more than two languages. Basically, English is an international language. so most of the people are able to speak this language. But I am able to know only few Indian languages like as Hindi, English, Punjabi, Marwari, Gujarati and etc.

That's an ironic answer considering you really don't know it very well.

@tsarstepan,

Does the question "How many languages do you know" really mean how many can you speak?
I would have answered with many. Not how many I speak, but how many I know exist like Latin, Swahili etc.
How many languages can you speak? I would have answered with "Four"
I know there is a difference in British and American English.
But that does not mean I can speak English.
