The Philosopher's Hangout is an institution where some of the world's greatest minds can come to chill and philosophize. This isolated hangout in the middle of nowhere, provides the peace and serenity needed for philosophizing. However, for the past few years in the two months leading into Halloween, the peace of the hangout has been disrupted by a series of deaths of the members. Whoever has done these crimes show no remorse and are somehow able to avoid detection from the Hangout.
This year, a tip from an anonymous source indicated "charlatans" would be infiltrating the hangout this year, presumably to continue the attacks. In response, the National Philosophical Association has sent their Undercover Philosopher to investigate and root out the charlatans. However, he cannot trust anyone there, as anyone could be one of the charlatans...
In this variation of Mafia, there are three groups of people: the Charlatans, the Members, and the Undercover Philosopher. Depending on the number of people playing, I will assign at least two Charlatan roles, one person will be assigned the Undercover Philosopher role, and the rest will be regular Members.
Before each round, excluding the first round: The charlatans, with consultations with each other, will PM me to indicate which one member they want axed. A scene indicating the death of that member ensues. For the first round I will make up a death scene so that no one misses out on playing a round.
During each round, Every living participant of the game will make wild accusations, baseless claims, ad hominem attacks, or even reasoned discourse in order to determine who the killers are. The charlatans can also contribute spreading chaos and discord, but without being too conspicuous as to tip anyone off. The Undercover Philosopher will also contribute in order to pass off as a regular member.
The Undercover Philosopher will PM me and ask whether a certain participant is the charlatan. I will reply by saying that that member is either a regular member or one of the charlatans. With that information, the UP knows who to vote against, but must also be careful as not to tip the charlatans off. The UP also cannot merely hand out this information, as he cannot trust anyone and be the next target!
Aside from the charlatans PMing among each other, PMing other members is not recommended and discouraged. But if there are PMs, be wary of anyone claiming to be the charlatan or the UP; they may be lying!
After some time, everyone will vote publicly on whom to axe at the end of the round. Majority wins, and the end of the round will be noted with another scene indicating the death of that member and what status he was. The scene will be written by me if there are no volunteers to contribute a death sequence.
The game ends when the all the charlatans are dead, or all the members + the UP is dead. The game needs at least 8 participants to start with to play properly, so sign up!
