A cattilo - Hereford/Bison

Traces of Texas reader Brian Bickworth thoughtfully shared this interesting photo of a "Cattalo" that was bred by the legendary rancher Charles Goodnight. It is a cross between a bison and a Hereford. You can see the Hereford portion of the cross in the animal's white face.

Thank you, Brian! I had read that Goodnight did this in J. Evett Haley's biography of him but I had never seen an actual photo of one. It's a mighty strange-looking critter, no doubt!

This is might odd alright but nonetheless beautiful! She reminds me of the spirits in Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away.

But there should be more! These are beautiful beasts, so majestic and regal-looking. I wish I could see one up close. Or not. But would still want to photograph them with my old Nikon FM3A...
