I don't let children play with hand grenades either, they might not go off with proper handling, but then again...

@Ceili,
What bullshit as before the news people turn them into devil dogs along with the dog fighting assholes picking them out as the breed to be used they was just another breed of dog.

I still have pictures of my dad as a boy with his pit bull terrier by his side dating back to the 1930s. When he would talk about this dog he would get tears in his eyes fifty years afterward.

In my childhood it was not the pit bull but the evil Doberman who was supposed to turn on their loving owners or children without cause and ripped them apart.

Dogs need to be treated with respect with special note of the large breeds however with 40 millions dogs living with 300 millions humans in the US the death rate for dogs attacks run around 12 a year.

No, plenty of wonderful dog owners have discovered they brought a killer into their lives. It has to do with breeding. These dogs have been bred to bite and hold on. Some pits will go though life without ever hurting a soul, but the majority seem prone to violence. I'm a former (very responsible) owner and I never let my pit near children or small animals. I would not own the breed again. How come you don't hear about killer Golden Retrievers or Collies?

@Green Witch,
Once more complete nonsense. I had seem in my own home an evil pit bull putting up with being annoy by my mother small dog and a kitten of mine.

I also been laughing as it seems highly likely that the death rate from falling over the housecat would be similar to the death rate from all dogs attacks in the US.

Second comment I would bet a large sum of money if I call the local newspaper claiming that I was a victim of a Pit Bull attack there would be a reporter knocking on my door, however if instead I stated if was a German Shepherd who was the attacker no such interest would be generated.

But then facts or common sense is never enough to deal with complete unreasonable fears generated to sell adv time on the local news channel.

Some killers as once more the total death rate from all breeds of dogs attacks in the US is around 12 a year.

If humans was so peaceful we could shut down all our prisons and children by the odds are far far far more likely to be in danger from their own human family members then from a household Pit bull.

@Green Witch,
Yes I am sure and if you ever was an owner of a Pitt Bull or for that matter a dog person of any kind I will cheerfully eat my mother dog dinner.

How sad that some people seem to have the need to spread fear just for the joy of doing so.

What is even worst it that they poor animals had the misfortune of becoming popular with dog fighters, picture as a devil dog breed as a result by the news media for their own benefits, attack by stupid politicians for their own benefits.

Now we have people like Green Witch cheerfully going on with the program for whatever emotional needs that doing so meet for them.

Sorry they are not devil dogs and no more or less dangerous then any other breed of large dogs and if raised as family pets with both love and respect are as safe as any other large dog breed and that is damn safe indeed.

I still find it amazing that we can share our homes and lives with what amount to wolves by the tens of millions and have such little problems and most of the problem we do end up with are the result of mistreatment by humans, not the nature of any breed of dogs.

Untrue. Pit Bulls and Pit mixes have something like 10 times as many recorded incidents of aggression as all other large dog breeds combined.

@Cycloptichorn,
There is something wrong and evil but it does not exist in any breed of dog but in the heart of mankind instead.

I don't think Pit bulls are evil, they are just doing what they are bred to do: fight in pits with other animals. However, this does not invalidate the fact that they are by far the most dangerous breed of dog which is commonly seen in this country.

@Cycloptichorn,
You do know that half of the so call fighting dogs of our friend Vick could in fact not be driven to fight no matter how poor the treatment happen had been to force them to fight?

That his group ended up killing those so call breed to fight dogs for not fighting correct?

This silliness would be a great deal simpler to sell to people who had not live long enough to know how people like you had try to sell the same nonsense with the same stories and in the same words concerning Dobermans in the 1960s.

Hell horror movies were produce showing packs of Dobermans ripping people apart.

One can only wonder what breed will be turn into the next devil dog perhaps the Rottweiler and those who are too young to remember the anti Pitt Bull or the anti-Doberman might buy into it.

@BillRM,
Not an opinion issue, brah - it's a factual issue.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/24436191/Dog-attack-deaths-and-maimings-U-S-Canada-September-1982-to-December-22-2009

Read for yourself. Pit and Pit mixes far outpace ALL other dogs for incidences of attacks causing bodily harm, and they are more then 3 times the next highest breed - which is, incidentally, Rottweilers, who themselves are 7 times the next highest dog, which is 'wolf hybrid.'

It's not a question of demonizing. Like I said, the dogs are doing what they were bred to do.
