They call it The Miracle on Ice, and it involved a buncha dudes I went to school with (but didn't know -- BU's a really big university): Mike Eruzione, Dave Silk, Jim Craig and Jack O'Callahan. Plus a buncha dudes from Minnesota (where Coach Herb Brooks did his thing before the Olympics).

Yeah, it's got the Defeat of Godless Communism angle to it. But it's also a great hockey game (and not even the final championship round -- the US had two more games to win after this one). Do you remember it?

Oh yeah. Screamed my lungs out.

It's hard to remember now what it was like for a bunch of college players to
beat the formidable USSR hockey machine. I would have been content to
see them score more than one on Tretiak.

But to return to topic. Mike Eruzione is a local guy. Well, local to my Orient
Heights - Winthrop - Beachmont stomping grounds of yore. I saw him again
at my cousin's daughter's wedding. He does motivational speaking these days
using the Miracle on Ice as his primary "you can do it" example.
