It's this damned book. Rome, by Robert Hughes.
He may be full of sausage, but I'm learning a lot again, in a revisited way.

I'm a resolute scarfer of stuff about italy, now for a couple or three decades, but I don't have an academic posture, or just the right brain for developed internecine academic warfare.
