@Olivier5,
Quote:
But atheism is as old as theism itself. For wherever we find belief in gods we find those who reject such beliefs. The American anthropologist Clifford Geertz thought he could trace atheism all the way back to Neanderthal communities. Atheism is certainly evident in some of the earliest Vedic writings from the Indian subcontinent. The Rig Veda, composed sometime around 1500 B.C., openly questions belief in a divine creator:

A lot of confusion must arise in your mind, because of your approximations and misunderstandings. The author said nothing about agnosticism with regard to vedic texts, and he was in fact referring to atheism. Why don't you try actually quoting the article, rather than restating it to suite your arguments. I'll be happy to move on when you stop makinr sh*t up.

And some of cannot distinguish that a "belief" that there are no gods...is a blind guess...just like a "belief" there there is at least one.

No trolling going on, Edgar...just a friendly discussion between the two of us.

You wrote:

Does it really matter? It's common sense that all phases of belief have existed, in some form, since humans first did belief. Just because it's not all in a book doesn't mean squat, in my opinion. There are just too many people for them to adhere to one or two beliefs about it.

To which I reasonably observed:

Quote:
Boy...with all this "belief" going around...it is a wonder some people still insist that the only "believers" are the people who "believe" in a GOD.

Why are you getting in such a snit about it?

Instead of all this snit nonsense, Edgar...why not acknowledge that it is strange that with all of this belief stuff going on, it is strange that the word "believers" is almost always applied only to people who "believe" that at least on god exists.

YOU, Edgar, are a "believer" also.

@Frank Apisa,
I for one am a proud believer in the absence of gods.

And you're a believer too, Frank, but you believe in something else.

What do I "believe in", Olivier?

And what does your guess about what I "believe in" impact on what I was saying?

@Setanta,
Quote:

Correct. It's only that the vedic quote, right after your quote, was more of an agnostic statement than an atheist one:

But, after all, who knows, and who can say
Whence it all came, and how creation happened?
The gods themselves are later than creation,
So who knows truly whence it has arisen?

Anyway. Case closed: neither atheism nor agnosticism nor anti-theism are new phenomena.

Moving on...

And that means something in your mind...but not mine.

So what do you suppose I "argue about with everyone" (which I do not)...that you are guessing is a belief?

Well...you apparently want to suppose that anyone commenting in the thread who does not buy into whatever you are selling...is trolling.

I do not.

There were some comments that were not "we atheists living our lives"...and I commented on it.

The comment seems to have gotten you into a snit, Edgar.

Now I am just wondering why.

Now I've got it. You believe that you know more about any subject than anyone else, and that you're always right.

Nope.

I probably acknowledge being wrong more than anyone else on this forum...even though most of us are wrong often.

To suggest I think, guess, or suggest that I know more about any subject than anyone else...is an absurdity.

So by saying that you're right and I'm wrong you're showing that you hardly ever claim to be right?
