@susief,
I had the same problem in my whole childhood. The fact that I am chinese doesn't help. I think it because rice absorb water in our stomach that cause heartburn. I tried cooking rice with more water and it helps. Also try eating congee and you wont have the same problem. Or try short grain rice, they are easier to digest.

Let me know if it helps.

@Alan1991,
Used to room with two Chinese college students when I lived in Sacramento, and they always made congee. We had it with Chinese sausage.

@Alan1991,
and I miss chinese sausage, here known as a general term as cheong, and I get that sausages vary there as much as they do re american sausages where I've lived. One of my favorite restaurant meals was a soup made with crisp tofu stuffed with cheong with a good broth.

This is a thread diversion, re the matter of eating rice.
So, back to congee....

@ChaunceyMcD,
Yes bro, just like that. I thought I was going to die. It was the most extreme measure I have taken in my life to abuse myself to get the rice unclogged. I literally thought "this is it" because my son wasn't even home. And I just finished a First Aid class and have saved two people in my life with Heimlich Maneuver.
That was months ago and happened a couple of times. I just had a few bites of rice tonight and it started to remind me.

Thank you for relating. I hope and pray that we can all help resolve each others problems without racial discrimination no matter who you are. Please, let us all come together.

Paul

I just read an article that in Japan many have allergy to rice. That's really tough, because that's the staple in Japan. Many eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
I also remember when I was a kid going to summer camp, many of the Caucasians ate rice for their morning cereal with milk.

For tonight's dinner, we're having rice with fish cakes.

OMG....I thought I was about to have a heart attack when this first happened to me about 3 years ago at work! And then today, the same thing happened again....tight chest pains that move to the back and extreme difficultly in swallowing and YES, liquids make it even worse! It has happened on a milder version with grits, which are of the rice family but mainly the worst scenarios happen with white rice....not so much with brown rice.I'm so happy to see the many replies and the possible solutions as to what it can be. I definitely need to have my yearly physical and I will have the doctor check my thyroid as well. I work out everyday so I haven't noticed any weight gain issues.

Sadly i passed out coming to not knowing how i ended up on floor. After disorientation , shock & being stunned wore off i remember slamming into the wall. I enjoy rice but sadly this episode may have me swearing it off 4 good!

So I thought I was crazy too. Everytime I eat rice after the first few bites I will get sharp pain in my chest that goes around to my left shoulder blade and my throat feels like its blocked and I feel like my whole body locks up. I can't swallow anything and if I try it makes me worse. I have seen a specialist although this wasn't the original reason, I did have the surgery of the balloon down my throat to expand my esophagus because it was narrowing. This helped immensely for a few months. Now when I eat the rice and can't swallow it starts regurgitating back up, if I go in the bathroom and just bend over it all comes out. I'm not really throwing up it feels like just regurgitating it. After I do that once then I can go back and eat as much rice as I want with no problem. It's weird. My throat spasms. The doctor put me on a form of nitrate for the spasms but it gives me headaches and I already suffer from migraines. It is interesting to note I do have thyroid problems as well as some of you. Tonight when we had supper I cooked rice but didn't eat any and felt fine 20 minutes later I went back had a few bites of rice and it is now 12 am and I can't lay down and I feel like I need to throw up. It does feel like a heart attack as some of you noted. I love rice and this just sucks. Oh I also do have a hiatial hernia I have for many years but the rice thing is new in the last year. Lord help us all I don't want to give up my Makotos, my favorite Japanese restaurant with amazing rice.

Me too! Only rice is the prob. No other issues. This started about 6 months ago. I am 55. First time was so scary and so painful. Since that first time I am leery of eating rice so when I do, I eat slowly and can tell after a few bites if it is coming on again. Seems it is only a problem with plain rice. I can feel it coming on and stop eating rice immediately and it passes after 15 minutes.

@susief,
As an Asian, we've been eating rice since infancy. When we eat rice now, we drink a lot of tea while eating Asian food. As far as I know, none in our family or friends have had difficulty eating rice, and I'm not even sure it's the tea that helps with our digestion. Just a thought.
