Carlton R. Franklin, who has spent nearly 20 years behind bars for kidnapping and robbery since the murder, has now been arrested for the terrifying crime, the New Jersey Star Ledger reported.
Triano's clothes were kept from the scene and advanced DNA technology showed investigators she had been raped.
Forensic tests led them to the truck driver, who is now 51 and still living in New Jersey. Prosecutors announced his arrest on Tuesday.
'We determined this individual who lived in the neighborhood had relations with this woman. He raped her,' said prosecutor Theodore Romanow.
He was arrested on Monday and 'didn't seem surprised', prosecutors said.
Triano, whose lungs had been punctured by the stab wounds, was found dead on March 15, 1976 - a day after the killing, police believe.

In 1982, Carlton was convicted of robbery and kidnapping after he broke into a home with a gun wearing a mask and held a family hostage.
He was released from prison in 1999 and has worked the same driving job ever since, his sister Venetia said.
Investigators solved the mystery as the Westfield Police Department had kept evidence from the scene for 35 years which was forensically tested.
Lynch, the retired detective, credited the Westfield Police Department’s evidence preservation with the success of the case.

Fairmount murder trial ends in acquittal, anger
A Common Pleas jury yesterday acquitted Quinzell McCall, 17, of North Philadelphia, of murder in the shooting death of a Fairmount teen last year, but convicted him on weapons offenses.
As the foreman announced the "not guilty" verdict on first-degree murder, a male cousin of victim Robert Pierson, 17, muttered, "F---ing...," as he sat in the gallery.
McCall, standing at the defense table, smiled.
When the foreman again announced "not guilty" on third-degree murder, Pierson's mother, Patricia Rounds, began sobbing aloud.
McCall's aunt, Karen McCall, arrived in the courtroom just after the verdicts were read. When told of the outcomes, she pumped her hands upward and mouthed, "Yes!"
Pierson's death - and now, the verdicts - has sparked racial anger among Pierson's family, who is white.
McCall was among six African-American teens, then aged 13 to 16, who came from North Philly into the Art Museum neighborhood March 23, 2006, with the intention of beating and robbing white people, according to the teens' testimonies.
"It was despicable," Edward Rounds, 37, of New Jersey, a cousin of Pierson's, said after the verdicts. "You can murder somebody and get nothing. That's basically what he got. He got a slap on the wrist. This is crazy."
Rounds yelled out in disgust: "Where do they get these jurors?"
The 12 jurors - composed equally of whites and African-Americans - were released from the courtroom before anyone else could leave the room. They could not be found outside the building afterward.
McCall will be sentenced Oct. 17 by Judge Carolyn Engel Temin and faces a maximum of six to 12 years on the two weapons convictions.
Afterward, McCall's defense attorney, David Nenner, said he thought the verdict "was a fair result as a result of the evidence."
Prosecutor Carmen Lineberger, while maintaining that evidence pointed to McCall as the shooter, said the jury must have "had reasonable doubt of who the shooter was."
During the trial, the five other North Philly teens who were with McCall the night of March 23 - George Graves, Dawud Thomas, Malik Loper, Demietrius Tadlock and Brian Crosland - testified as prosecution witnesses.
They all testified that McCall had shot Pierson or had the gun in his hand that night - or that they had heard from someone else in the group that McCall had shot Pierson or had the gun.
Pierson, a senior at Franklin Learning Center and a star baseball pitcher on various teams, was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital in critical condition. He was taken off life support about three weeks later.
