Hey, i am looking to buy a car and i came across a 1989 honda accord sedan with about 160000 kms on it. When we started it up, we noticed that exhaust (or some other smoke that smells like gas) was coming out of the engine compartment. We opened the hood but we couldn't figure out where it was coming from. What problems might this indicate and what are the average cost of the repairs needed to fix them?

That's still new enough that it could have an EGR system. Seems the tubing from exhaust to EGR valve is vulnerable to breaking or burning through the tubing. If this is it, and assuming parts are available, I would err on the side of caution and say in excess of $300.00.

Could be something else, like exhaust manifold gasket, or who knows.
