Is it true that accumulated e-bond interest is taxed in the year the bonds mature even if they are not redeemed for cash?

Without going into technical questions, the interest is taxed when the bonds are redeemed, reach maturity or are cashed (whichever occurs first). For more specifics see IRS PUB 550
