Plea - Name of a Book

Hi - in the mid 70's my primary school teacher read us a book out loud about a child traveling to safety with only a compass to guide him - he had to overcome the issue of not deviating from the straight line this set him - doe0s anyone have a clue what it was called? Its a bit vague but I live in hope!
