I was told that he told this for a joke:
What word begins with 'f' and ends with 'uck?'
Answer: Firetruck.
True or not I cannot verify.
I know. I recalled that one after I typed it. It's one of the more entertaining urban lies out there, though.
To be honest, Soupy Sales creeped me out a little bit when I was a kid.
I don't remember laughing at his show, but thinking that he was an grown up that was getting away with saying stuff to kids that he would say if other grown ups were around.
I didn't think he really cared about kids, just thought it would be an easy job to make kids laugh.
You thought that way as a kid?

sure, why not?
you never felt someone would be creepy to be around?
never got vibes from a grown up that didn't add up?
I was a kid, I wasn't stupid.
From Annie Hall....
oh hardy har har, stop I can't breathe.
Soupy was one of the first comedians who crossed from kiddies to adults. My Dad would watch him and that creeped my mom out.
Humor should have a streak of discomfort shot through it.
Thanks for that Annie Hall. I never saw the movie.

That's why I like PeeWee Herman.
edgar, as I told Phoenix, I never saw Soupy Sales. Was this the theme from his show?

Somebody else will have to answer that one, letty.
I was and you knew what I was doing.

I loved him as a kid - but I was (and probably still am) a silly buffoon. How can you not love (especially as a kid) some one very silly?
I guess I was beyond my years as a kid

I rest my case.
HOW can you not laugh at this/

I got a bit of a chuckle at the first part but did not laugh at the rest. Of course, some find him funny.

being selective in our senses of humor IS NOT a sign of high intelligence, quite the opposite.

I didn't see anybody discussing or mentioning intelligence. Does make one wonder what you know about that topic, however.
See, I found that really funny.
