it is the story of a group of children born to the women of a small English village after the appearance of an alien space craft

they are all born with golden eyes and silvery skin and have telepathic and telekinetic powers

the title is a reference to the cuckoo bird, which lays its eggs in the nest of other birds in the hopes that they will raise the cuckoo's offspring as their own.
