THey purposely neglected the PORSCHE Cayenne which C&D and Consumer Reports classed as the WORST SUV ever made.
I drove one 3 years ago when I was mildly interested in a lease and I found it to handle really crappy and was waay overp[owered and under mileaged for such a car. Imagine that the HUMMER H II was second in badness to the CAyenne.

My choice for ultimate small off-road vehicle would be the old Auto Union version of a jeep with the three cylinder two-stroke engine.

Other than that I totally agree with the choice of the "smart" car as worst of the worst. That thing is truly dreadful to drive.

There were some worse 'SUV's' in the 1960's than the DKW Munga*. But not many with a three-cylinder-two-stroke-engine.

*Munga = "Mehrzweck UNiversal Geländewagen mit Allradantrieb" (Multi purpose universal cross-country car with all-wheel drive).

Yes, we even had it in the navy (we got all those things the army didn't use anymore). Very Happy

In (southern) Germany a "grosse weck" is a normal 'roll' of nearly small bread-size.

It actually wasn't an Audi but a DKW. But it was really good in the country .... and the mudflat (tidal lands).

Well, officially it was an Auto-Union-DKW car Embarrassed
(So AUDI would be correct.)

I'm not sure the editors of this list understand the main purpose of the smart car. Sure, the MPG is tad underwhelming for such a small car...

but are they that bad to drive? I have to admit I have yet to drive one so I'll take your word for it if you say they're death traps on stubby lil wheels.

They seem ideal for city driving. I wouldn't dare drive it on the highway but in terms of limited parking space and squeezing between the hordes of taxis, it seems to be an ideal city car.

In what type of neighborhood, if you don't mind me asking did you drive one in?

I question the editor's emphasis on styling and appearance. The Aztek has to be one of the ugliest vehicles ever produced. So what?

I just went with the "Olympic Rings" symbol and called it an AUDI, but the acronym holds

You read that wrong. I didn't say worst for the Munga, I said best; that's the one I'd want if I had to have an off-road vehicle with four wheels.

Worse. Dangerously slow and as the article says, with an suv-like tendcency to roll over.

There's a Smart Car between the two trucks ... you can see it if you look closely. Wink

I'm guessing the driver didn't survive this encounter.

Here's a safer Smart Car:

And they are good for parking in those tight spots ...

re mileage for the smart:

Quote:
European Union (EU) testing rates the 999 cc Smart at 4.7 L/100 km (60 mpg-imp; 50 mpg-US) for the gasoline model and 3.4 L/100 km (83 mpg-imp; 69 mpg-US) for the diesel.[citation needed] The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the vehicle at 36 mpg-US (6.5 L/100 km; 43 mpg-imp) combined.[3]

re safety for the smart:
in the Euro NCAP-Crashtest the smarts got (all) 4 out of five stars. [Generally, small cars get worse test results in the USA, no matter what made.]
In the insurance class, the smart is one of the cheapest cars (only for the smart Brabant you have to pay a bit more).
