Songwriting

I have been playing guitar for about 5 years. Within about the past year, I have written several "instrumental" pieces...some of which I would like to put some lyrics to. I have written a couple of full songs, but they are comical and not the slightest bit serious (one of them is about the beverage "Beer-30") I would like to be able to write some serious songs, but don't really know where to begin. Any ideas? Advice?

Listen to the greats, read poetry and write, write, write.

just relate to any serious events in your life; past, present or even future. then just tell it like a story, or dedicate the song to someone, in a positive or negative way

Thanks for your insight. I will definitely give this a try. Do you write songs?
Thanks again
