There is some sports talk here on A2K. Being that the road to the 2010 World Cup has begun, I thought that I'd see if there are any soccer/football fans here.

Excellent!

So, does anyone plan to attend any games? I'm going to try and go to USA v Costa Rica here in DC in Oct.

You know what is great? is that you can always count on there being a highlight video on youtube after broadcast games. We can embed and talk about goals. This is particularly good for us in the US, because not many of the matches get aired.

They've just recently started playing some games here in Atlanta. No WC qualifiers yet, but maybe soon. Is there a schedule somewhere?

For Team USA: http://www.ussoccer.com/Schedule-Tickets/Schedule.aspx

For WC in general: http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/preliminaries/matches/index.html

You can sort by team as well. No info on broadcast though. :-\

You (the USA-team that is) might get a player from my "team (Schalke 04) as national player:Jermaine Jones.

If we win versus Russia .... then we've feathered our nest.

The Columbus Crew is actually quite good and I've been pulled in a bit. Haven't seen them live yet I'm interested. Sozlet plays soccer (I used to) and I may take her and a few of her soccer pals.

Of course - the WM is always exciting to watch! 4 years ago when the
FIFA cup was in Germany, I was there and it was so great to see so many
people from around the world sitting with us in outdoor cafes and restaurants
(they all had giant TV's) and watch the games together. A friend of mine
is going to South Africa for the games next June to root for the Americans!

Football is about 22 men kicking a ball around a field Cal and not about tweeters making themselves into their own talking points.

Walter, I'd like to make a joke here, but I don't know your sense of humor and I wouldn't want to offend.

All the same, I don't know much about the Russian team, so go Germany.

I've no humour at all with football. That is something very serious. Wink

(The Russians aren't that bad at all, thanks to their Dutch coach .... and a lot of money.)

So I guess Poland is happy to be in Group 3 and out of the way of the both of you while you fight it out.

You're right about Russia I think. A nice open to set the pace on the path to the WC would be nice.

I'm most interested to see how we play this time around. Our new coach is controversial and erratically effective. I have hope we'll make ourselves proud this time. Hell, I'll be happy if Landon Donovan can wipe that stupid "duh" expression off his face.

The United States Women's National Soccer Team is operated by the United States Soccer Federation. The team is ranked #1 in the world by FIFA. The team has won two Women's World Cups (1991 and 1999); three Olympic Women's Tournaments (1996, 2004 and 2008) and six Algarve Cups (2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, and 2008). The United States U-19 women's national soccer team also won the inaugural FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship in 2002, and the U-20 team won the same event, now renamed the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, in 2008.

You guys have a mountain to climb to match that.
