Fox reports he was 94.

I suggest they settle it with knives.

Just this once it seems Fox is right (will miracles never cease?). CNN has corrected its on-line obit.

Pan, thanx for that Youtube clip. Paul invented the whole technique of overdubbing one's own performance, something which today is standard practice but was unheard (and unthought) of back in the 1950s.

The "Log" Les Paul's guitar invention
http://www.npr.org/programs/morning/features/patc/electricguitar/lespaul_log.jpg

Quote:
Paul built his own guitar, using telephone parts for a pickup and a wood post as the body. He called it "the log," and he says that when he first played it in a New York City night club, the audience didn't know what to think. "You come in with a four-by-four, people look at you like you're freaked out," he says. Paul went home, cut the body off a Spanish-style guitar and glued it to his log -- "and it went over great."

I just want a dollar for every time I played "Mocking Bird Hill." Besides the electric guitar and the multiple recording overlap technique, Les and Mary Ford were great singers and picked their material carefully. It's sad to hear of his death.

I was on a long drive tonight and the local college has a fascinating show called "The Old Time Radio Hour"
It was devoted to Les Paul, and one of the more interesting sections was his work on the Burns & Allen radio show where his trio was featured in the interludes. He was a phenomenal guitar player
