Gibson, the California dog dubbed the tallest in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records, has died after a battle with bone cancer.

The 7-year-old harlequin Great Dane from Grass Valley measured 7 feet, 1 inch (2.16 metres) when standing on its back legs.

He was diagnosed with the disease in April and had his front right leg amputated to prevent its spread. He also underwent chemotherapy as a precaution.

Gibson's owner, Sandy Hall, learned last week the cancer had spread to his lungs and spine and that no treatment that could save him. Hall decided to euthanize Gibson on Friday.

Gibson appeared on "The Tonight Show," "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," and on Japanese television in 2006 after being named the world's tallest dog."

I would suspect so. Rather clever, but missing grocery carts will probably result in price increases for customers.

But those price increases would happen with or without the missing carts. The missing carts are already figured into the store's quarterly droppage figures.

@Merry Andrew,
Actually the problem would be solved if they chain the carts together and
only a coin will release the cart - like they have on airports.

@CalamityJane,
I've seen some stores, cj, where it is physically impossible to take a cart out beyond a certain point (say, the parking lot). You cross a particular threshold and the wheels lock up automatically. At Marshall's in the South Bay Shopping Mall in Boston, you can't take your cart out of the store after stopping at the check-out counter. I've seen people try to wheel their purchases to their parked car and discover with connsternation that they can't get further than the sidewalk in front of the store.

@CalamityJane,
Actually, from what I've seen, even with that there is still some problems. It appears to me like (if you look carefully on the handle) that cart could have the "insert a coin" feature.
