The best stretch of highway 101 is going TO San Francisco (starting out in
the south - San Diego or Los Angeles).

I would take 101 to San Francisco, then take Hwy 1 from SF north.
That will take you thru some of the old Russian towns, thru Manchester, point Arena, Ft. Bragg, and some other really beautiful towns along the coast.
I have driven that route many times, and I love it more each time.

El Camino Real

one of my favorite roads, but I like the Oregon and Washington stretch the best.

Thank you.I think your route seems doable.I researched on the web.
Any decent places to stay around the 300 mile mark from San Fransisco?

300 mile mark? I like - Ferndale, Eureka, Arcata, Trinidad and don't know north of that well, except to say, if you're up around Orick, there's a fern forest towards the beach and a meadow where elk tend to gather..

Don't know if there is any place to stay there. I mean in Orick. There are many places in all those others, each good for their own reasons.

Uh, there are places you can turn off of 101 toward the coast that you could be sorry about later in terms of windy road. Research all that first.
