Best Sweetener to Use

Reply Fri 24 Jul, 2009 08:48 pm
Because I have health problems, I obviously cannot use sugar. The question then is, what can you sweeten food with, that will do no harm to the body? I have seen pros and cons for different substances, but I am afraid to trust any of them. Anybody have an opinion on this?

I use Stevia, as it doesn't promote sugar cravings and doesn't raise blood sugar
levels.
Here is some info to it http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/stevia/AN01733

I use sugar, or honey, and little of it. I've no interest in constructed food products.

I use raw honey currently. Processed honey is no better than sugar.

Am interested in stevia.

Good raw honey is expensive in my neck of the woods. Which might fit with it's proper use.

I messed up my quotes, sorry about that.

You obviously can't use sugar? My view, probably radical, is wean yourself from sweets and then occasionally use real sugar.

Hi, EdgarB. I was the provider of horrible cookies at a patio gathering recently. Don't take those as any kind of useful.

My view is that the best sweetener is either sugar or honey. Work yourself away from things needing to be sweet. Given that you do that, the occasional real sweet thing will be a treat.

I'll sound like a crank, but my main complaint about any restaurant food is that it is too damned sweet.

Well, except for Spinns and the non swallowable burgers and miserable buns (waves to Roger).

FDA take on it: http://www.fda.gov/Food/DietarySupplements/ucm109764.htm

They do have concerns about long-term use, but they did just approve it. So, be aware.

A true addict cannot wean, then use occasionally. I have done that several times, only to find myself back where I started from.

Hah! Even in the old McTag thread I was vouching for Stevia. I've been
using it for quite some time now and like it. Then again, I don't use sugar/sweetener all that much to begin with: I drink my coffee and tea without
sugar/sweetener and look for grocery products with low sugar content.
I am not diabetic, not even remotely, but I try to curb my sugar intake.

There are so many people stating that sugar feeds cancers that I have to take that as being true, and act accordingly. It's not possible to avoid all sugar all the time, but I drink tea and coffee without sweeteners. Problem is, I am a compulsive eater, and that makes it hard to avoid junk between meals. One can eat only so many carrots before craving something else.

You know edgar you don't need to eat all that many carrots Very Happy
I just came back from Europe and there I could experience again that people
tend to eat everything - but far less of it. When you eat a risotto with a rich
creamy sauce, you're satisfied with a small serving, and strangely enough,
you don't have cravings for anything else either. Even eating just a tiny bit of a rich, chocolate dessert will satisfy your appetite completely.

Here in the U.S., we buy everything fat free and cook bland healthy food,
yet our plates are twice the size of the ones in Europe, and we're still hungry
afterwards, right?
