Hello I have a question, why is it ok for men and women to have separate Locker rooms?

The Reason that I ask this question is that I have just started to work out and Have to go and used the men's locker room when I am done. Was wondering why they had decided to make two separate locker rooms men and women? it would save space and money!!!!
