How old is your son? Often youngsters react differently than adults do to things like coffee. For kids with adhd, coffee is sometimes considered an alternative medication to pharmaceuticals like ritalin. Caffeine and ritalin are both stimulants, but both can act to calm hyperactivity.

I know a child whose mother gives her son coffee for just this reason. She confessed it to me - I think because he is allowed to have coffee in class. She told me her doctor recommended it - and I agree better than giving some prescription drugs.

My understanding is it is the stimulant that actually helps the child concentrate. Like K said - ritalin is also a stimulant.
