Sweet Girl with Liver Problems Needs to Fatten Up

Reply Mon 15 Jun, 2009 08:49 am
My almost 14 year old sweetheart has high liver enzymes. We all agree no biopsy. She is on denmarin and prednisone but losing weight despite a good interest in wet food and especially her treats. Any suggestions on how to fatten up Elsa who previously was chubby. She is otherwise happy and her laid back self.

Can we assume you refer to your pet?

If so, tagging this topic for pets might get you more of a response.

Yes, Elsa is a polydactal feline. How do I get this on the pet board. I am new to this all

I just tagged the thread for pets, and for cats. I resisted the temptation to add my usual disclaimer that cats is the spawn of SATAN.

Add a little olive oil to her regular food. It's easy to digest and high calorie .

Thanks. I will try that. I just left a message for my vet to see if she thinks we should try Hills A/D or L/D

COurse, now that I think about it more, there are very few boats that have livers .

Katfarmer--is vitamin B6 and 12 out of her diet? we use these with a molasses or honey coating to get an animal eating again. Is her skin real slow to return to its shape if you pinch a bit?

We have 3 REAL veterinarians on the A2K line, maybe they will check in .

She is not taking any vitamins. She just finished amoxy drops for 2 weeks because she had a minor infection and is taking prednisone. We are finishing up on 1 tablet a day for 10 days & then 1/2 for the following. She takes denmarin (we had been doing denosyl but opted to add the milk thistle) too.

Getting Elsa to eat is not the problem. In fact, I give her treats after meds and she would eat the whole thing if you let her. She LOVES her wet pate food its just that she went from chunky to thin. I have a call into the Vet to see if she thinks we should start her on A/D or L/D. Thankfully no dehydration here

Any suggestions are welcome

If she was previously chubby and the weight loss has occured over a short period of time, the high liver enzymes may indicate fatty liver disease. Have you done an ultra sound on kitty to rule that out?

I had a kitty with high liver enzymes, he had gone about 2 days without eating anything though which caused fat to mobile into his liver. I used a high calorie/high protien canned cat food that the vet prescribed and fed about every two hours until he gained some weight back.

Have they checked for thyroid problems?

Her thyroid is fine thankfully though I did have one who took Tapazole for 7 years and lived to be 19 1/2. They have not done an ultrasound. They can do an exray. The specialist can do an ultrasound but her first visit there would have been $400 and my husband has been out of work since March so we could not do that. The weight loss is over about 6 months and she is still eating like a champ most of the time, thankfully. Which food did you use? Thanks for your help and advice. Elsa Shmeltza Cinnamon Toast (her full name) and I appreciate it

The name of the food was "Max Cal" I think it was by Eukanuba. (only purchased at the vet)

I am glad to hear it was something gradual so that pretty much rules out the need for a US to determine if it is fatty liver.

The prednisone should be making kitty hungry, but I think it should be given about a half hour to an hour before she normally eats to have the proper effect. (my expereince with giving it to one of my kitties)

You could try Stage 3 baby food. I had a kitty who would eat and eat and eat it as long as I fed it off a spoon. If I set it down, he had no interest in it.

You might also try adding gravy, bacon grease, or oil to her dry food. My kitty prefers it to be warm also. Very Happy

Elsa Shmeltza Cinnamon Toast..wow that is a very unusual (and terrific) name!

What a great name!

Actually we made it into a song, Elsa Shmeltza Cinnamon Toast, the striped and spotted girl we love the most. If someone can tell me how to post a photo, I will post one of her and you will understand her name. I tried olive oil tonight and she was not happy. So, I made her some chicken. A friend recommended Neutromalt. Have you tried that?
