CIA Chief Believes Cheney Almost Wants U.S. Attacked

WASHINGTON

CIA director Leon Panetta says it's almost as if former vice president Dick Cheney would like to see another attack on the United States to prove he is right in criticizing President Barack Obama for abandoning the "harsh interrogation" of terrorism suspects.

"I think he smells some blood in the water on the national security issue," Panetta said in an interview published in The New Yorker magazine's June 22 issue.

"It's almost, a little bit, gallows politics. When you read behind it, it's almost as if he's wishing that this country would be attacked again, in order to make his point."

Cheney, who was a key advocate in the Bush administration of controversial interrogation methods such as waterboarding, has become as a leading Republican critic of Obama's ban on harsh interrogations and his plan to shut the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

In a blistering May 21 speech, Cheney said Obama's reversal of Bush-era policies were "unwise in the extreme" that would make the American people less safe.

Panetta called Cheney's actions "dangerous politics."

He told The New Yorker he had favored the creation of an independent truth commission to look into the detainee polices of former President George W. Bush. But the idea died in April when Obama decided such a panel could be seen as politically vindictive.

He remembers how helpful 9/11 was to his group's intentions and objectives back then: it made everything much simpler, didn't it.

He'd be far from the only person to want something horrible to happen to prove themselves right.

I'd not be surprised if this were true.

But I don't think it's just a Cheney thing.....though I do think him a truly execrable human being.

A foreign terrorist attack would take the focus away from the domestic terror attacks that are filling the headlines which is an indication of a seated liberal government asserting conservative conspiracies through right wing militias.
And most importantly the inability of the right to believe in the GOP which is purposeless and leaderless in a time fraught with danger.

Human suffering is like Viagra to a guy like Cheney. I agree with dlowan, there are others just like him wishing for the same thing to satisfy their need to be paranoid.

He's a holdover from the Bush administration. Was he molesting 'em under GWB's nose?

He's just following Obama's lead... I understand he was unwilling
at first, but PrezBO said it was for the good of the country.

I do not believe Cheney would want another event a la the Reichstag Fire.

But, I can understand that some of those that know German modern history might think such a belief seems credible.

I find it a bit unsettling that the director of the CIA so publicly expresses such a partisan opinion.

I'm not sure why I believed that such a consumate politician as Leon Panetta would restrain his partisanship when taking over the reigns our foremost intelligence agency.

Kind of unbelievable, no?

I see no reason why the Director of Central Intelligence should not comment on the irresponsible remarks of a political loudmouth who wields considerable influence with a segment of the nation's population.

I agree. This is not a real news article. This guy just throws his opinion out there for people to jump on. If Cheney had actually said something like this, it would be news, but Panetta saying he believes Cheney would want this is nothing. I don't know that it is particularly partisan rather than a personal attack, but I don't know why this is getting any press.

I think Cheney's statements demand a message. If he wants to help, there are ways to be a contributor, but to just blatantly undermine the current administration is nothing more than his megalomania.

I'm hesitant about intelligence personal being too public, not that I disagree with what he said.

How does saying that there is a danger and that we should recognize it indicate that Cheney wants an attack to prove his position? Provide any tiniest particle of evidence that Cheney wants an attack. The only wrong being done in connection with this issue is making up motives for someone and then blaming him for them.

You didn't read the linked quotes, I suppose. Nor the title of the thread, it seems.

Title: quote "CIA head: Cheney almost wishing US be attacked" end of quote[/]

Linked and quoted above: [double]quote "When you read behind it, it’s almost as if he’s wishing that this country would be attacked again, in order to make his point." end of quote

I'm not going to provide more evidence since I only linked and quoted.

You started a thread indicating a desire on someone's part for his own country to be attacked, based on wild guessing and mind-reading, and now complain when someone suggests you provide even a particle of evidence. Despicable.
