I was quite underwhelmed with the priest's acting, but I was impressed with the story and the tension created by Eastwood and the on screen chemistry between him and the boy.
What I think was different from many of his other movies was that he did not fire any guns, as he was known to in his westerns, and Dirty Harry movies.
In effect, he used his brains to outsmart the opposition. Perhaps, the message is that we get wiser with age?
