how do i set up an R4 card for nintendo DS

i get error messages when i try to load the card and don't know whether i need to configure the micro sd card before use. I have already switched from 4gb to 2gb card as i am told that worked better but the ds screen is still black. It no longer sats 'loading....' like it did before but doesn't let me play any games. HELP!
