I would like to know the approximate (land) distance from New York City to Portland, Oregon. I say "approximate" because I am trying to estimate a trip taken in the late 1900s.

Anyone attempting that trip would, of course, go by rail. A passenger might board the train at Penn Station in New York and take the Pennsylvania Railroad to Chicago. The passenger would then switch trains (as they used to say, all trains rain to Chicago, but no trains ran through it) and take the Burlington Route (CB&QRR) to the Twin Cities, and from there take the Northern Pacific to Portland.

I have a distant relative who emigrated from Scotland to USA about 1892 and records show he went to Oregon, so the question is - around 1892 how would he have travelled from New York to Portland, Oregon and how long would it have taken?
