Nick White - "I Got Stuck In A Lift And Ruined My Life"

Quote:
All living creatures have a fear of being trapped. I was truly terrified in that elevator. But my mistake was that I prolonged my entrapment. My life was in good shape, then I went for the big bucks and ruined everything. I haven't had a job for 10 years and I've never married. I walked into an elevator with one kind of life and walked out with a completely different one. But it wasn't the elevator that ruined my life. It was me.

You may have seen this video of the incident below, where he was stuck in an elevator for 41 hours. But in the article above it talks about the impact it had on his life over the next years.

I think I remember something about Mark Twain's family, expecting a big real estate sale. And, just like the guy here, they wasted their lives waiting for the windfall that never happened. All except Samuel, who wrote stories and essays.

41 hours is a long time. Surely, he didn't hold "it" for that long! Was it edited out?

I once was stuck in an apartment elevator for an hour. I couldn't imagine 41 hours. Shocked

Read it. I do remember he went downhill afterwards, but not the business about lawsuit, etc.

I was trapped in a work elevator at the university on a friday night for a couple of hours after working late, but I didn't get anywhere near his level of fear. I figured pretty fast the janitor might help, and that turned out to be true. But, I can fathom having it be a horrid event.

There was also another kind of story about that situation, since then - crime fiction if I remember, though not the same kind of setting. If I remember more, I'll give a link. It's coming back as I type, a woman trapped in a jewelry vault....

He and the American super-size version of the so-called "nanny state" (ie I'll sue, no matter how ridiculous my claim, and be rich with no effort) and the din of the bottom-feeding lawyers did him.

Sad.

When you see him forcing the elevator door open he was actually peeing down the shaft. I'm still baffled as to how that could have happened.

What does he mean he prolonged his entrapment?

He allowed this event to dominate and control his life for years. He staked everything on the payout and lost.
