Oh ho! Bittman fan here, though I've never seen him on the telly, nor have any of his cook books. Come back and tell me/us about it, if you watch (no tv here).

I will but I can't watch it tonight. It's on too late for me. I will record it and watch it tomorrow night.

(I have to admit to a teensy crush on old Bitty. )

Osso, You should be able to watch the episode at http://www.colbertnation.com/home Tonight's isn't on there yet but should be there tomorrow. I thought Bittman held his own. I haven't read his book, Food Matters yet, but I've read a lot about his ideas and agree with most of them.

He's been touring around for the book lately. Was in Toronto a month or so ago for the better part of a week. I'm trying to find out where he ate as he was on radio raving about the restos he'd been eating at locally - but wouldn't say where on the radio.

He had a Bitten post about some of the tour, SF - Seattle, I think, and Portland and environs, including the red mill grain place, maybe about their oatmeal (not a big plus). His experience in SF was very 'eh, but the foodie city and its nifty places weren't his big focus.

On his visit to Toronto and the rave comment place, would be interesting to see if you agree.

Yea, he's such a lovable curmudgeon. I hope he does more tv. He's great.

Beth, have you checked out his blog on NYT.com? It's called Bitten. For a while, like Osso said, he was kind of doing a daily diary of what he ate on the road. I think it was last month. You might check the archives.

reply to self, MB didn't really diss the red mill place, just the particular dish. Hard for me, I don't like any oatmeal as such, even the very best, I think of it as slime.
Signed, bitch osso

while I do use oatmeal in recipes. It's just the dish slug I avoid.

I understand, osso. I eat oatmeal and don't dislike it but it doesn't thrill me either. I put flax seed meal in it to give it some nuttiness plus much fruit, sugar and milk.

Beth, here's the link to Bittman's report of what he ate in Tornoto. http://bitten.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/01/27/what-i-ate-week-2/

ha!

Taste of China. That was the one I was looking for. I heard his interview just after that meal. Scallop-shaped tofu in the scallop dish.

Bistro 990's always reliable.

Thanks for finding that Swimpy.

Today on my recipe-a-day Bittman calendar - onion rings. Yahoooooo!
