1. They are playing football in/on the field.
2. The cow is grazing in/on the field.

Are both prepositions correct in each of the above sentences?

There could be some situations where the other would work.

The cow is grazing on the stuff we planted in the northwest corner of the field.

They are playing football in that small fenced off portion of the field.
