Do you find it condescending when someone says, "Good girl?"

"good girl" was said twice to me yesterday

I was outside, chopping ice, trying to clear the storm sewer drain. First J came out - she's in her late 60's - saw what I was doing - "good girl" with a big smile and a wave as she climbed over a snow bank to get to her car. Then B across the street came by - early 60's - "good girl" and a comment about what a hard slog she was finding the ice chopping in front of her house - and that she was hoping her adult sons would help.

I couldn't find a way to get worked-up about it.

Well, I don't go out of my way to get worked up or anything. Life's too short. I just find it icky and inappropriate.

Jes, you and I are on the same page, but I do have to make an exception....

Some people can just call you girl and it's fine.

I work, and consider myself friends with one of those people.

Her normal greeting to almost any female is "hey girl". To her it's an endearment.

During the course of any given conversation she may say "Oh girl, I'm so sorry to hear that", "Girl, I'm going to have to get back to you on that", "Let me tell you girl, we worked on that for hours."

No one has ever been offended by her doing that. It's just her way.

RACIAL PROFILING!!!!

In fact, she is as white as I (am)

I cracked up one time when she came to my office. She's part of the interview team, and that day they were going to do a phone interview with someone who lived in another state, and was moving here. She said she preferred that she call us on that day.

The candidate called in and we put her on speakerphone. Apparantly she bumped her phone at home and disconnected herself before anyone could even say hello.

Anyway, she called back within a minute and you could tell she was embarrassed. "Oh, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to hang up on you. etc."

S. just gushed "Oh GIRL! That's all right! I do that all the time."

Another thing S. does is this sharp intake of breathe at anything the least bit exciting or shocking.

My mother died....
GASP! Oh girl, I'm so sorry.

I found asparagus on sale at the market.....
GASP! I'm going to go to the store, Randy just loves asparagus!

Now, keep in mind this is a woman in her late 50's with a masters degree who makes Well into the 6 figures each year.

That's our girl.

Black peoples say girl?

Tell me more.

If I ever get to meet a blacker person one day, I'd like to be able to communicate effectively.

This business about all of them say boo concerns me.

Are they trying to scare the white people?

i can't remember who the black comedian was that told this story but it always makes me laugh

he was shopping one day when somebody approached him in the frozen food section and asked if he had a preference for a particular brand of fried chicken, he immediately went on the defense, accusing the person of being a racist and assuming that because he was black he's know the best fried chicken, he ended the story be saying he was so offended he tucked his watermelon under his arm and tap danced right out of that store
