Quote:
CENTCOM commander Gen. David Petraeus, supported by Defense Secretary Robert Gates, tried to convince President Barack Obama that he had to back down from his campaign pledge to withdraw all U.S. combat troops from Iraq within 16 months at an Oval Office meeting Jan. 21.

Obama better lay down the law because between the military delaying withdrawal and Rahm cracking his knuckles in Obama's ear in front of the media, it looks like Obama is not in charge after only 2 weeks.

PrezBO had better listen to what the generals are telling him.
We don't need another bone head move by PrezBO.

If Bush had listened to "the generals" we wouldn't be in Iraq at all.

I can't figure out if that's an anti-war sentiment, or a pro-listen-to-the-generals sentiment.

Listening to competent military officers is often the most effective anti-war measure that one can take.

Hadn't the previous administration already signed a withdrawal agreement with Iraq?

At the risk of flaunting my ignorance -- I remember a resolution being drafted but I don't remember it being signed. With a quick Google search I easily found a draft of the agreement but nothing about it being adopted.

From what I've read about the meeting between Petraeus and Obama, Petraeus was trying to get him on board with an arangement to recatagorize combat troops as support troops and Obama sent him back to the drawing board.

An interesting article can be seen here: http://www.veteransforcommonsense.org/index.cfm/page/article/id/12250

Thanks, Boomer. I did a little searching and found that according to Reuters,
the agreement was signed Nov. 17 by Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari
and U.S. ambassador Ryan Crocker. The deadline is Dec 31, 2011.

The Boston Globe reported that this "Status of Forces" agreement was passed
by the Iraqi parliament Nov 27.

This is Feb 2009. Sixteen months bring us to - um - June 2010. So is this all
about not withdrawing 18 months earlier than the agreement calls for, or is
there more to it than that?
