Yes, I wondered if he might be hinting at the damage that is being done to education by religious ideas (like ID and Creationism) sneaking into science education, but I wasn't sure.

It makes me wonder if that sentence was intentionally crafted to mean different things to different people. If so, a very subtle phrasing.
