It is incredible how excited the people of the world outside the United States seem to be over the inauguration of Mr. Obama. People in Toronto are organizing celebrations, and many interviewed on CBC have said they will keep their children home from school to watch the event.

So, i'd be interested in international comment on this, the whys and the wherefores. I hope the feriners among us will comment.

You rang, Setanta! Wink

I'm so giddy with relief at the change of US government that I could almost faint.
I mean it.
Gigantic phew from Oz!
At last, at last!
Congratulations, America! You did it!

(I could say much more & may do so later, but it's so hot here I honestly can't think straight right now.)

It not being Bush is a major part of my joy.

Having such a powerful and intrusive country under such leadership has been a nightmare.

I have not followed the whole election thing all that closely...though Obama having not supported the Iraq invasion is HUGE for me..and that he appears unafraid of showing that he has brains and scholarship is enormously appealing.

I also feel wonderful that you guys have elected a black president.

I would have been relieved if McCain had won....but not AS relieved, as I see McCain as having more adherence to policies I consider negative....but he had some very decent qualities as well, I think....for an American president.

It sort of feels almost as good as getting rid of the Howard government.

This inauguration IS NOT for the "rest of the world".

This is for Americans to celebrate the 44th time we have had an orderly transfer or power.

The rest of the World can just sit down, shut up and watch. Maybe they will learn something.

I suppose, we only can make copies of such, at least those, who don't live in a monarchy.

But thanks for giving the allowance to watch, Woiyo - it's live on five channels (plus BBC, CNN, France24 etc) here.

Thanks, Walter. Do you have any sense of how interested the Germans are in this event?

Seemingly because he has no reading comprehension, as well as lacking some other qualities.

Set never said the inauguration WAS "for the rest of the world".

The Scandinavian royals have not had any coronation since 1906.
As far as I know there is not one single EU country making such a fuss about a new president or prime minister. I can“t remember that there has been such celebrations either when other European kings or queens took over the throne.
A new royal on the throne is much more seldom than a new president in USA.
It is good Obama was elected.

Here is one reason why, Frank.

What exactly does the "rest of the world" need to be congratulated about? What does "FINALLY" mean?

I find is disingenuous of the many foreigners who for way too long have criticized America while they took advantage of the generosities of this Nation.

The rest of the World needs to watch AND ENJOY as WE AMERICANS celebrate and once again show the WORLD how a Nation of Laws can orderly transfer power. We have done this for over 200 years, uninterrupted, and remain the model for others to copy.

The tone of your post was ridiculous, Woiyo--mocking and uncalled for.

Even if what you say motivated you is correct...you could have handled the comment in a much more dignified, less mocking way.

Under any circumstances...I think most people around the world realize that, for better or worse!, America and its policies impact on everyone else. And I dare suspect most non-Americans are less interested in what lessons can be derived from today's proceedings...than with the relief they are feeling that a rogue administration is finally on its way out.
