German lovers – aged six and five – try to elope to Africa

Anna-Bell, Anna-Lena and Mika at the police post at the main railway station in Hanover, central Germany, after being caught heading for the airport so Anna-Bell and Mika could 'get married in Africa'.

It is a dream that has been shared by lovers across the centuries – the chance to elope to exotic lands. But few would have been as bold and spontaneous as six-year-old Mika and his five-year-old sweetheart Anna-Bell who, after mulling over their options in secret, packed their suitcases on New Year's Eve and set off from the German city of Hanover to tie the knot under the heat of the African sun.

The children left their homes at dawn while their unwitting parents were apparently sleeping, and took along Mika's seven-year-old sister, Anna-Lena, as a witness to the wedding.

Donning sunglasses, swimming armbands and dragging a pink blow-up lilo and suitcases on wheels packed with summer clothes, cuddly toys and a few provisions, they walked a kilometre up the road, boarded a tram to Hanover train station and got as far as the express train that would take them to the airport before a suspicious station guard alerted police.

I've read about them. In the meantime they tried a second time to escape...
Here they are - sunglasses and all, ready for Africa!

In the eyes of children, the world is very simple and easy.

these kids must have been taking lessons from Paris on how to get good press, I don't believe that they are as innocent as they act.

That has to be one of the cutest stories I've seen in months (and a welcome reprieve from all the tragedy)
It reminded me of Gary W and Debbie C when I was in kindergarten.
He LOVED her, worshipped her- if he couldn't sit next next to her in circle time because someone else got to those spots first- he'd do whatever he had to do to get them to move - trade his twinkies, give them his milk money, whatever...(everyone wanted to sit next to her - she had long blond hair down to the middle of her back and blue eyes and perfect porcelain skin - I even wanted to sit next to her...(she was nice too).

He was this skinny, gangly, looking kid, not destined to be handsome, you could tell by the time he was five - but she loved him too.

I don't think they ever eloped, but it was just obviously a love that was meant to be (for a while at least).

Wonderful story Nimh - I can't believe how smart these kids were - knew which train to take, big sister as the witness....really cute.
(I think they're for real Hawkeye).

I was born in Lil' Rock,
Had a childhood sweetheart,
We were always hand in hand.

I was hightop shoes and shirt tails,
Suzy was in pig tails,
I know I loved her even then.

You know my papa disapproved it,
My mama boohooed it,
But I told them time and time again,
"Don't you know I was made to love her,
Built a world all around her"
Yah! Hey, hey, hey.

She's been my inspiration,
Showed appreciation
For the love I gave her through the years.

Like a sweet magnolia tree
My love blossmed tenderly,
My life grew sweeter through the years.

I know that my baby loves me,
My baby needs me,
That's why we made it through the years.

All through thick and thin
Our love just won't end,
'Cause I love my baby, love my baby. Ah!

My baby loves me,
My baby needs me,
And I know I ain't going nowhere.

I was knee high to a chicken
When that love bug bit me,
I had the fever with each passing year.

Oh, even if the mountain tumbles,
If this whole world crumbles,
By her side I'll still be standing there.

Oo baby, I was made to please her,
You know Stevie ain't gonna leave her, no,
Hey, hey, hey.

Did he mention what aroused his suspicions, or is that something they can't divulge?

Three little children alone on a railroad station is enough to make a station guard suspicious that something is wrong.

though German kids routinely use mass transit without adult supervision to an extent that Americans would find shocking. Small kids in an area for intercity passengers would be highly suspicious though.

This 'marriage-tour' was done on New Year's Day.

The following Monday, they tried it again .... but were caught by their father, at the bust stop next to their home.

The father now changed the house's lock/key system.
No reports about new tours since then.

Why don't the parents just do a little mock wedding?

That's a great idea! I think this was such a cute story Smile A mock wedding would be perfect.

Oh my. That completely sounds like something Mo would try.

He's had the same girlfriend for the last year and they pretend they're married.

Note to self: Thomas, when you find a girl you really like, don't forget to arm yourself before you marry her.
