Should 'day' be in upper case?

Maybe: only proper nouns should have capitals: Chirstmas is a proper noun: day is a common or garden noun.
If you view Christmas Day as a proper noun it should be capitalised. However christmas crackers are not capitalised. The distinctinction is that the first is a named individual event: the second is a generic entertainment.
