From another board - this is real, not hypothetical:
Talking to a friend last night. Well, actually he's the father of my friend. He lives in the heart of the city in a condo but owns a single dwelling house on the outskirts. There were quite a few houses in the area. A month ago he went out to the house and it was gone. All the houses had been torn down. In their place, a large construction project - An 8 story building, 2 floors of commercial spaces and 6 for apartments.
He talked to the police, they told him to leave. He went to the local government office - No help. "Go away." No lawyer would take his case. It's rumored the contractor and financiers have bought off most everyone (a common occurrence there)
He went to Beijing to plead his case but people he met after arriving told him lots of folks were in similar positions and come to do the same thing. But, if they pushed it after being told to leave, the police escorted them to the airport and alerted local police so they could meet them as they got off the plane (or train).
Then I was asked, "What would you do?"
