It's not a Christmas song, but religious all the same. Breaks me up every time I hear it.

@Swimpy,
I agree with you, Swimp.

So, I'm sitting here in the computer swamp with Cecilia Bartoli's A Portrait on the blaster, thinking, I wonder if she ever did an Ave Maria.

Yep, so now I have to make room among the favorites.

@ossobuco,
Oh, and a youtube poster long beat me to posting varied ave marias, including caruso's.

I'm no music sensatativa; I tend to like feeling over precision and haven't much of a clue about substantial vocal ability; might or might not be happiest with someone with a great voice also seeming to pay attention to the nature of the composition, emotionally.

this is a song about south african independence -

'we are marching in the light of god...'

makes me feel like marching - if not falling to my knees

Singing along to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWLVnsAbPoI on the way to work -- very soothing. (Yep, the freebie CD from Canadian Tire -- In the Bleak Midwinter by Sarah McLachlan.)

Shaped note hymns... My two favorites are 'Babylon is Fallen' and 'Hail the Blessed Morn"

It has its good side and is soothing as sung by her, but you know our church choir did that one last Christmas and I hated it. It was a downer - slow, depressing, unjoyful, and I dreaded practicing and then performing it. You know how some music lifts you up and other puts you down?

I'm sure different music does that differently to different folx tho.

@Foxfyre,
I'll agree with you on this one Foxfyre. I like Sarah McLachlan's version but didn't like any others I checked out on YouTube.

This is one of those odd things, I guess.... last night, I was thinking ---for the first time in a couple of years, even though it's hypocritical --- I'd put some Christmas music on my Tagged page. I am the sole agnostic among my closest friends there, ...and my sparkly "Festivus" sign is probably striking people as a bit overly cynical... so, I immediately began searching for my favorite one, "O Holy Night." There's always been something about that song that was so powerful to me when I believed the story. It was always my favorite. When I sang it at home or church, my voice always wavered and tears brimmed. ...and Boom hit the lines that used to always bring tears to my eyes, and still do. I'm sure it has a lot to do with the swell of the music....

"Fall on your knees...and hear the angels voices..."

There's one more. An Easter song..and I was a lot more in love with Easter than Christmas... " Was it a Morning Like This?" by Sandy Patti. "Did the grass sing? Did the earth rejoice to feel you again? He is risen... alleluia... alleluia...." Miss that Jesus guy.
