http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/world-news/chile-earthquake-death-toll-rises-30147130.html

Excerpts:
Five people were crushed to death or suffered fatal heart attacks, the interior minister said, but Chile apparently escaped major damage or serious casualties.

The shaking loosed landslides that blocked roads, power failed for thousands, an airport was damaged and several businesses caught fire.

About 300 inmates escaped from a women's prison in the city of Iquique, and Chile's military was sending a planeload of special forces to help police guard against looting.

In the city of Arica, 86 miles from the quake's epicentre, hospitals were treating minor injuries, and some homes made of adobe were destroyed and 90% of customers were without power.

The quake also shook modern buildings in nearby Peru and in Bolivia's high altitude capital of La Paz.

4.9 Earthquake Hits Idaho Town in Reminder of 1983 Killer
A 4.9 earthquake shook a sparsely populated part of Idaho on Saturday but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, authorities said.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit just after 6 p.m. local time (9 p.m. ET) and was centered just 9 miles from Challis, a town of about 1,000 and the largest city in Custer County. It was a shallow quake, centered just 3.1 miles deep, the USGS said on its website.

A dispatcher at the Custer County Sheriff’s Office said items fell from shelves there but no damage or injuries were reported. Challis is about 120 miles northeast of Boise and 130 miles southwest of Butte, Mont.

A 1983 quake in the region, measured at 6.9 on the old Richter scale, killed two children in Challis and damaged a couple hundred homes and commercial buildings, most in the town of Mackay to the southeast.

Oklahoma rattled by an uptick in earthquakes

Oklahoma, a state more known for tornadoes than seismic shifts, is becoming all too familiar with earthquakes of late.

In the past seven days, 48 quakes larger than the magnitude of 2.5 have struck, says Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey. In the past 30 days, there have been 157 quakes larger than magnitude 2.5.
"We've never seen anything like this in Oklahoma," he says.
The numbers back him up.
"Since 2009, the earthquake activity in Oklahoma has been approximately 40 times higher than in the previous 30 years," says a February report from the Oklahoma Geological Survey, a group that first began monitoring earthquakes 40 years ago.
About two to six earthquakes a year in Oklahoma were recorded by the USGS National Earthquake Information Center from 1972 to 2008.
In 2009, about 50 earthquakes were recorded, and the numbers have continued to climb.
In 2011, the state had magnitude 4.7 and 5.6 earthquakes in November, with the 5.6 magnitude event "the largest quake to hit Oklahoma in modern times," says the USGS. At least two people were injured, 14 homes were destroyed and many were damaged, says the USGS.
All the recent shaking has rattled residents' nerves — and has led to speculation, and debates, about what's behind the tremors. Some have taken to social media and other public forums contending that hydraulic fracturing — or fracking — and the deep-injection wells used for disposal of fracking wastewater could be causing the uptick.
The February OGS report says it "has not ruled out that some earthquakes may have a relationship to oil and gas activities such as water disposal/injection, and examining these issues remains a major focus of ongoing research."
Yet the report added that "the majority, but not all, of the recent earthquakes appear to be the result of natural stresses, since they are consistent with the regional Oklahoma natural stress field."
An October statement from the U.S. Geological Survey, made in partnership with the OGS, said "a contributing factor to the increase in earthquakes triggers may be from activities such as wastewater disposal — a phenomenon known as injection-induced seismicity."
But at this point, "there is nothing conclusive," regarding the cause of increased earthquake activity, says Priyank Jaiswal, an assistant professor at Oklahoma State University's Boone Pickens School of Geology.
While studies on possible causes are being conducted, he advocates for more general education for the public to understand the basics of oil and gas drilling, fracking and deep-injection wells.
Whether these quakes are natural or human-induced, residents need to understand the potential causes, and that that there could be more quakes to come, he says.
"When our homes shake, we are concerned," he says.
