DEBBY , the world's oldest polar bear and living in the winnipeg zoo died at the age of 42 .

The 42-year-old polar bear was born in the Russian Arctic in 1966 and came to Winnipeg's Assiniboine Park Zoo as an orphan a year later. The bear's health had been failing in recent months and she was euthanized Monday as her organs began to fail.

Ahh. Sounds like she had a good long life. I had no idea the average life expectancy for polar bears in the wild is only 20-30 years. I had figured at least 50 would be normal.
With a short life span and the ice melting, they really could be wiped out pretty quick.
I remember visiting the Winnipeg zoo many times and seeing Debbie when I lived there for a couple of years in the early seventies. I had no idea that she had lived this long.
