Miriam Makeba, the gal from South Africa with the gorgeous voice, collapsed and died of a heart attack on stage.
Quote:
Makeba collapsed on stage Sunday night after singing one of her most famous hits "Pata Pata," her family said in a statement. Her grandson, Nelson Lumumba Lee, was with her as well as her longtime friend, Italian promoter Roberto Meglioli.
"Whilst this great lady was alive she would say: 'I will sing until the last day of my life'," the statement said.
Oh, a few minutes ago, I posted her famous song in the music thread.
I didn't see that she got her own thread . Miriam Makeba certainly had a
great voice, and great spirits.
I think it's fitting that she had just performed in a brave appearance re the Mafia/Camorra threat to Roberto Saviano, whose story I've been following. Typical Makeba, caring to the end.
I recall Harry Belafonte was instrumental in bringing her to America's attention, having her appear in his concerts and recording African songs on albums together. She was a fabulous entertainer and a great lady.
I saw her perform only once, in a lovely little venue in Vancouver (perhaps about one hundred seats). It was a marvelous evening. And I could add that she was one of my dear mom's favorites.
