abs are built in the kitchen, not in the weight room or by doing 18,000 crunches. The only way you'll ever see a six pack is to get down to 5-7% body fat. Good luck.

isn't that an unhealthy body fat percentage?

Pick your parents carefully, genetics play a role in how your muscles can be shaped.

are you male or female?

If you're a guy, then no it's not unhealthy (you don't want to go less than 5% though).

If you're a woman then I'm not sure what the % is, but it will defiantly be low. Find a body fat chart online and look for a body fat % range labeled "athletic". You will likely see your abs if you are in that range.

Now that's not to say you shouldn't do situps and such. Having a strong core is important even if you can't see it.

Hmmm. Depends if you want your 6 pack visible. I used to have one, but you couldn't see it, but you could feel it. But yeah a visible 6 pack is a combination of low body fat, genetics and muscle building.

On the muscle building side read anything on abs published by Human Kinetics - (very reputable sports and exercise science publishers). Don't just do crunches, you have about seven layers of muscles in your abs and they require different workouts.

Ding ding ding we have a winner!

A strong core is important for a lot of things -- heavy lifting, for example, plus it helps to prevent back pain. But as to whether that strong core will be visible depends upon stripping away fat, and that's extremely difficult to do down to that level. It's not impossible but it is not easy by any means. I'd say, exercise your entire body, not just the core, eat right and maintain a healthy body mass index. Your abs may or may not appear 6-pack-like, but you'll be considerably healthier.
