Visiting NYC. Where to get a good hotel?

We are visiting New York City for the weekend. I would like to be able to park the car (to avoid driving in the city).

My theory is that the further away from the city, the less expensive the hotel. I would like to find a place where I can get a decent discount hotel rate that is an easy (i.e. within an hour) train ride to Manhattan.

Does anyone have any advice on where I should look?

"Well, that's it! I refuse to go any further away! If this hotel isn't cheaper, I'm staying home under a sun lamp."

I used to train in from Wilmington Del. PArking there was free and then Id stay at a hotel near the "garden" in the 30th police district. It was an old hotel that was redone in an art deco style. Everything built in and kinda cool > reasonable rates for NYC (about 200 + per night). Youre right to park yer car in another state. Where you coming from? Anyplace that you could train in? Thats the best, cabs are easy and buses and subways are available for cross town.
I hope you get to see some of the NYC people , maybe youll have better luck meeting up with em than I did.
I get up there about 1 a month on dayhop business trips and none of the NY crowd ever wants to meet so screw em.
