Attack the future, and beat it into submission.

Or not.

I had to tape this to my computer at work and look at it, repeatedly, for years, before it sunk in:

I didn't cause it
I can't cure it
I can't control it.

Years ago, a subordinate mid-level manager
for one of my corporate clients used to have stationery
with a cartoon of a RR conductor on it,
saying to his superiors:
" I can't run the engine.
I can't ring the bell,
but when the train
goes off the track,
I catch all kinds of hell."

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." -- Margaret Mead

A bit hoary, but it's been fuel for me many a time.

I once was feeling sad and distressed about something, I dont remember what, and in self-pity I went to look up my Hungarian friend A.

She said some nice or encouraging things to reassure me, but when that didnt immediately help, she sighed and came out with the truth of life according to her.

"Nimh," she said (except she didnt call me Nimh of course), "you have to realise: life" - and here she gestured in confident resignation - "is suffering".

It was supposed to make me feel better.
