Happy birthday: 50 years IKEA stores

Swedish superstore IKEA opened it's doors for the very first time in Älmhult on October 1958.

The founder of IKEA, Ingvar Kamprad, was born in the area of Älmhult and the store there is the first in the world.

I'll have some organic pasta and cake as birthday meal ...

Ikea must be the only superstore-chain that I really, really like. Happy anniversary, Ingvar Kamprad -- and thanks for Ivar, Billy, and the "as is" department!

That's cool. I was there just this passed Thursday. I love their paper napkins. Colorful, graphic, perfect for feeding the shopping monster in me for just 1.99.

I feel like such a kid, I've only been shopping there for 25 years.

Another set of votes for Ivar and the "as is" room. Oh, and the cleanest store bathrooms in the GTA.

That cost in Sweden $2.56, eoe, and in Germany ...

... between $1.33 (30 pieces) and $2.68 (50 pieces).

(I noticed that the only difference between various IKEA's is in price .... and some 'cultural' differences in the restaurants - e.g. you can't get hot meals in the afternoon in France.)

Lucky eoe!

I'm still lobbying for them to put one closer to Columbus. The Cincinnati one isn't TERRIBLY far but awkwardly far.

Yes, the as-is room is a sure-fire smile-inducer. Most recent find was a red Tullsta chair, perfect condition but out of the box, something like $60 (usually $99, which is still crazy-cheap for a good solid upholstered armchair -- they're always turning up on "Trading Spaces").

We've six (or maybe seven) shops within a distance of 70 miles - but that's only because we live rather central close to various larger cities/metropolitan areas.

I discovered IKEA 1989 in Munich, always loved it. It is wonderfull to finally live near a store in America.

I know the one in Munich very well, and I am also glad that we have one in
town here in the U.S.

IKEA is great!

Our house is done in Ikea. Not much that we sit on, eat off, etc. isn't from there.

(There are -meanwhile- two in Munich: in Eching [from 1974] and Brunnthal [2203], the latter being the greatest in Germany with 37,700 m² (nearly 400,000 square foot). [The one in Cincinatti has 32,000 m²/344,500 sq.f.; and in San Diego, well, better a small one than none Wink ]
