Pathways to permanent residency

On this page:
When can you apply for a permanent visa?
Which permanent visas can you apply for?

After you have lived and worked in Australia on this visa, there are several permanent visas that you can apply for.
When can you apply for a permanent visa?

You can apply for a permanent visa after you have:
lived for two (2) years in a Specified Regional Area and worked, including being self-employed, for one (1) year in these same areas.
See: Specified regional areas
or
obtained sponsorship under the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme.
Which permanent visas can you apply for?

You can apply for any permanent visa in Australia, however the Skilled - Regional (Residence) visa (subclass 887) is specifically designed for holders of a provisional skilled visa who wish to apply for permanent residency.
See: Skilled - Regional (Residence) visa (subclass 887)

The Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme visa (subclass 857) has reduced eligibility requirements for holders of a Skilled - Regional Sponsored (Provisional) visa (subclasses 475 and 487) or a Skilled – Independent Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 495).
See: Concessions for the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme visa (subclass 857)

This site has an explanatory article that looks ok, as far as I can tell:

Hopefully these are a start for you.

Hi Purnima,
I've got a good friend who was in a similar position to you. There are a number of options, and I encourage you to check out the sites posted by Dlowan. The path my friend has taken is to initially apply for a work visa, supported by her Australian based qualifications. She has subsequently applied for residency and is currently working and awaiting a decision on her residency application. As a medical student, you are well placed considering Australia's shortage of medical professionals. Good luck, and keep us posted.

Yes - I worried about what PR was.

In the medical field, and Purnima is a student, the letters have a whole (pun intended!) different meaning.

Hi pon

A good starting point for you would be to check the (Australian government) links dlowan posted (above - 2nd post).
